Sans Absence kick off 2018 with their 6th release - Bristol-based producer Noire’s debut EP. Noire will be a familiar name to many for his prolific work rate, with his dubs being staple features in many percussion-heavy UK club sets. The ‘Castle Futur’ EP solidifies this, bringing out three of his most sought-after and propulsive peak-time tracks for everyone to wheel.
The EP starts out with steel-pan roller ‘Palm Leaf’. Its rolling rhythms and foundation-shaking bass give a quick nod to the understated swagger of UK funky classics like Mario’s ‘Bloodclart Bass’ or Cooly G’s ‘Weekend Fly’. But Noire adds more elements to the vibe, using skittering, restless snares, ghostly siren blasts and a hypnotic vocal to bring moments of hype out of the laid back funky framework.
Second track - aptly named ‘2nd Guessin’’ - goes all out. It builds a choppy melody out of street sounds, shouts and pulsing side-chained drones, and layers everything on battering-ram percussion that gradually develops in depth and intricacy as the song progresses. It’s a club weapon with a lot of detail.
Closing the EP is title track ‘Castle Futur’, which strips everything back to deadly effective drum-hits and stark, war-cry horns. One to keep the dance-floor marching.
